WHAT HAPPENED

David Chaum published a blind-signature construction for privacy-preserving electronic payments, addressing how digital payment systems could avoid exposing a person's payment history.

WHY IT MATTERS

This is foundational private-digital-cash research. It is broad cryptographic lineage, not a claim that Chaum was building Zcash.

WHAT HAPPENED

Eric Hughes published A Cypherpunk's Manifesto on March 9, 1993, arguing for privacy through cryptography and systems that let people selectively reveal themselves.

WHY IT MATTERS

It captures the philosophy behind building privacy tools rather than merely asking institutions for privacy. This is ideological context, not a direct Zcash predecessor.

WHAT HAPPENED

Adam Back's Hashcash work introduced a computational proof-of-work mechanism originally aimed at limiting email abuse. The later Hashcash paper cites the original publication as May 1997.

THE CONNECTION

Bitcoin explicitly cites Hashcash and adapts proof of work as part of its consensus design. Hashcash belongs in the Bitcoin technical lineage, not as a privacy mechanism that directly became Zcash.

WHAT HAPPENED

Wei Dai described b-money in November 1998: protocols for pseudonymous participants to exchange value and enforce contracts without a conventional central monetary authority.

THE CONNECTION

Satoshi's Bitcoin paper explicitly cites b-money. This is part of Bitcoin's documented intellectual lineage; it is not a direct predecessor of Zerocash.

WHAT HAPPENED

Hal Finney announced RPOW on August 15, 2004. His system accepted Hashcash proof-of-work tokens and issued transferable RSA-signed reusable proof-of-work tokens.

WHY IT MATTERS

RPOW was an important pre-Bitcoin digital-value experiment. Its server and attestation security model differed materially from Bitcoin's later decentralized consensus.

WHAT HAPPENED

Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper in 2008, combining peer-to-peer networking, proof of work and a public transaction history into a decentralized electronic cash system.

THE CONNECTION

Bitcoin made decentralized ledger-based digital money practical, but its public ledger creates privacy limitations that Zerocoin and Zerocash later addressed explicitly.

WHAT HAPPENED

On August 13, 2010, Satoshi discussed “key blinding” and group signatures as possible directions for stronger Bitcoin privacy and linked cryptographic material hosted under a Hopwood web directory.

PRECISION NOTE

The archived Satoshi post proves the link and discussion. It does not, by itself, establish that the linked material was authored by Daira-Emma Hopwood, so ZeroTrace does not make that attribution here.

WHAT HAPPENED

Ian Miers, Christina Garman, Matthew Green and Aviel D. Rubin published Zerocoin, proposing a cryptographic extension to Bitcoin aimed at improving transaction privacy beyond public pseudonyms.

THE CONNECTION

This is where the path becomes direct: the 2014 Zerocash paper explicitly builds on and improves the earlier Zerocoin work.

WHAT HAPPENED

Eli Ben-Sasson, Alessandro Chiesa, Christina Garman, Matthew Green, Ian Miers, Eran Tromer and Madars Virza published Zerocash, using zk-SNARKs for ledger-based payments designed to hide origin, destination and amount.

THE CONNECTION

Zerocash explicitly builds on Zerocoin. The research and team around Zerocash led directly into the project that became Zcash.

WHAT HAPPENED

Zcash launched its mainnet on October 28, 2016. Its original shielded protocol is now commonly referred to as Sprout.

THE CONNECTION

The Zerocash research lineage became a live cryptocurrency network: Zcash.

WHAT HAPPENED

The Sapling network upgrade activated at block 419200 on October 28, 2018, introducing new shielded addresses and major performance improvements for shielded transactions.

WHY IT MATTERS

Zcash privacy did not stop at launch. Sapling materially improved the usability of shielded transactions and helped make broader wallet integration practical.
